Glossary of Terms
Analog Load Cell
Weight sensor consisting of strain gauges arranged in a
Wheatstone bridge configuration.
Analog Output
Current or voltage signal used to represent a numeric
value in legacy control systems. Analog outputs are typically
low resolution.
Bluetooth
A short range wireless communications standard used for
peripheral devices instead of wired solutions such as RS232
or USB.
ControlNet
Open standard fieldbus used for large data sizes on complex
devices used by Allen-Bradley and others.
CTPZ
Clear, Tare, Print, Zero. Simple, single ASCII character serial
command set. Also includes Select and Units switching
commands in some terminals.
DAC
Digital to Analog Converter, used to produce analog signals for
analog outputs.
DeviceNet
Open standard fieldbus used for smaller data sizes on simpler
devices used by Allen-Bradley and others.
Discrete I/O
Used to monitor devices such as switches and used to control
devices such as valves and motor starters. Low level I/O
generally refers to 5–24 VDC levels. High level generally refers
to 115 VAC or greater switching capacity. Discrete I/O is also
known as digital I/O.
Ethernet
The communications protocol for lowest layers of the 7 layer
Open System Interconnection (OSI) model. The seven layers
are (starting with the lowest): Physical, Datalink, Network,
Transport, Session, Presentation, and Application.
Ethernet TCP/IP
The communications protocol including the upper layers of the
OSI model. Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) organizes
packet delivery and Internet Protocol (IP) establishes the
connection between devices. A typical use is in an office
network.
Ethernet/IP
Open standard Ethernet based PLC fieldbus that uses TCP/IP
with a special Industrial Protocol (/IP) application. This Indus-
trial Protocol is essentially the same as is used in ControlNet.
Use of this fieldbus requires a device to specifically support
Ethernet/IP. Used by Allen-Bradley and others.
Fieldbus
Automation network consisting of a physical layer and
communications protocol. Several popular fieldbuses use
RS485 or Ethernet as the physical layer. Some field-
buses are open standards, while others are proprietary.
Floating Point
An IEEE-754 32 bit single precision (as used by METTLER
TOLEDO) real number consisting of a sign bit, 8 bit exponent,
and 23 bit mantissa.
IDNet
A METTLER TOLEDO measuring cell communications protocol
used with high precision products.
Integer
A 16 bit (as used by METTLER TOLEDO) whole number
consisting of a sign bit and 15 significant bits.
There is no decimal point.
MMR
METTLER TOLEDO Multi Range product line –
scale terminals with their own protocol.
Modbus Plus
A proprietary fieldbus used by Modicon and others.
It is not compatible with Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP.
MonoBloc
A METTLER TOLEDO electromagnetic force restoration
(EMFR) weighing cell design.
PLC
Programmable Logic Controller used for process control.
Typically consists of a processor running the control program,
a fieldbus scanner (master), and discrete I/O. Similar to a
DCS (Distributed Control System).
Profibus DP
A Siemens and German government developed open standard
fieldbus. It is not compatible with Profibus PA or ProfiNET.
Used by Siemens and others.
Protocol
Message format and rules that determine which device
transmits or receives, and when this occurs.
PS/2
A serial port standard used by a keyboard or mouse.
Some bar code scanners use PS/2 ports.
RIO
Remote I/O, an Allen-Bradley fieldbus. It is not the same as
Data Highway +, nor does METTLER TOLEDO support DH+.
RS232
An ISA serial data transmission hardware standard suited
for short distance and supporting a point to point connection
only. A communication protocol is not a part of the
RS232 specification.
RS422, RS485
ISA balanced line multiple node serial data transmission
hard-ware standards. Communication protocols are not
a part of the RS422 or RS485 specifications.
Shared Data
Internal scale terminal memory used to pass information
between internal modules within the scale terminal
and remote applications.
SICS
Standard Interface Command Set, a METTLER TOLEDO
serial protocol.
USB
Universal Serial Bus, a serial data transmission
hardware standard.
WLAN
Wireless Local Area Network. Typically based on
IEEE 802.11 standard. WLAN is also known as Wi-Fi.
